The Assistive Technology Loan Program is a state and federally funded program that helps qualified South Carolinians with disabilities obtain the assistive devices and services they need to become more independent and enhance their quality of life.

It provides loan guarantees for people with disabilities to purchase equipment and services that will enable them to reach their full potential in the workplace and the community.

Access to the program is provided regardless of disability, age, income level, location of residence within the state.

Who can apply?

People with disabilities, their families or friends on behalf of the individual with a disability can apply for an assistive technology loan.

How do I qualify for a loan?

You must have the ability to repay the loan. The program will look at your income compared to your debt, stability in your current residence and/or job, and credit history. The type of assistive device or service to be financed must relate to the type of disability of the user.

Some applicants will not qualify. However, the criteria for the loan program’s guarantee guidelines are much less stringent than those used by most banks. This will provide an opportunity for many people to be approved for a loan who otherwise would not qualify.

What type of equipment can I purchase?

The program will facilitate loans to purchase a broad range of assistive devices, including but not limited to:

  • Wheelchairs
  • Motorized Scooters
  • Braille equipment
  • Scanners
  • Hearing and vision aids
  • Telecommunications devices for the deaf
  • Augmentative communication systems
  • Environmental control units
  • Computers and adaptive peripherals
  • Building modifications for accessibility
  • Motor vehicles and vehicle modifications
  • Home modifications

How long does it take to approve a loan?

Once a completed application and all supporting documentation have been received, it typically takes no more than two weeks to receive a decision.

How much can I borrow?

Individuals may borrow up to $30,000 on secured items and up to $10,000 on unsecured items. Minimum loan amount is $1,000.

What are the interest rate and repayment terms?

Interest rates vary depending on the collateral, but generally are below market rates.

Terms may range from one to seven years, depending on the loan.
